The name of the game: basketball. The food of choice: Carolina barbecue. And the vibe? Southern charm meets high-brow intellect. North Carolina is a state known for its scenic beauty, its rustic charm and its school spirit. Three major universities make this state an epicenter of education, while the rolling Appalachians (and gorgeous Outer Banks) set the scene for tons of outdoor activities in the backdrop. There's so much to see when you're driving across the state in your North Carolina rental car that making the trip just once might not be enough.
One of the best things about North Carolina is the weather -Winter temperatures are cold enough for snow, particularly in the mountains, but the scenery is so beautiful, you won't even notice. The Appalachian Mountains are a perfect destination to enjoy the weather anytime of year. These beautiful mountains sit along the westernmost part of the state, where you'll find Asheville and Boone - two fun, bustling mountain towns. Skiing, hiking, biking and camping are among the most popular activities to participate in here, while simply cruising through the winding mountain roads isn't a bad idea either. Traverse the mountains on The Blue Ridge Parkway is one popular location to do just that. Nicknamed "America's Favorite Drive," it's an area of the High Country you won't want to miss.
When you hear about The Triangle, you may be surprised to find that this region, within the Piedmont, encompasses the cities of Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill. Together, they form a triangle of major research universities (Duke, University of North Carolina, and North Carolina State) alongside a computer and biotech office campus. In addition to quaint college towns, the area is also home to many high-tech companies and serves as the South's financial capitol making the area popular for both business and leisure travel. If you want to visit all three campuses in your North Carolina rental car, head for the middle of the state.
